This conversation is between Ralph (Lord of the Flies) and George from (Of Mice and Men). Ralph is now a psychiatrist and is giving George treatment.
Ralph: Ah, George. How are ya? I’ve heard much about you. I’m Ralph. I will be your psychiatrist for the next, let’s see, six months is it? Ok let’s get started then, what brings you in?
George: Well doc, life right now is not quite the way I had planned.
Ralph: How so?
George: Well, I’ve got this friend, you see. We were real close you see.
Ralph: Were real close?
George: Yes, he died, rather murdered by me. Man, this is tough.
Ralph: Wait, you killed your best friend?
George: Yes, I admit it, I did it. But I needed to.
Ralph: Explain this to me.
George: You see, my friend Lennie, He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. It was always him and me together trying to live a dream that I knew would never come true unless Lennie was not involved. You, see Lennie was a good person but also was mentally challenged. He just didn’t process what a normal person can. This is what was holding me down. As I realized he was the reason I was not making it anywhere in life, I knew our hopes and dreams would never be reached.
Ralph: Sounds like you killed him just so you could live a better life?
George: No, no, that may have been part of it, which I regret one hundred percent, but they was going to kill him anyways, a mob was after him. If anything Lennie at least deserved a not as torturous death with what he had to go through in life.
Ralph: Ah, I see. This sounds like you had some hard decisions to face. But I believe you made the right decision to let him die quickly rather than torture. Not to get sidetracked, but you know this takes me back, let me see, about two decades ago now I believe. You see, I was on a plane with all other children from my school. We were in the middle of the ocean and it crashed onto a deserted island. I know it sounds crazy but it is no lie.
George: This sounds great and all but what does this have to do with my problems?
Ralph: Hold on I’m getting there. As I was saying, I was the leader of us all. I had this really good friend we called Piggy. Very helpful and reliable, always was there if help was needed, but was picked on regularly because of his size and push over personality. As days went by on the island, an unfortunate accident happened.
George: What was that?
Ralph: He was hit by a boulder and was killed. I know not the most common death, but that aside it was still wrong for him to go so early. Piggy deserved much more than what people gave him.
George: That’s exactly how I felt about George too. People were always making fun of him, but if they only knew him, they would see the nice guy that he really was. But, doc I still do not see where you are going with this.
Ralph: If you look deeper, my Piggy was your Lennie. They both died wrongful deaths, both were loyal friends and good people, and both deserved more from life then what they were given. Then both of us, we were the leaders. They needed us to go on and live better lives.
George: You know you got something there doc. You and me, we are not that different.
Ralph: Exactly, our stories are so similar it makes it easier to relate and feel better about our lives. This concludes our first session together and I hope you walk away with a lot of relief and comfort after this session. Hopefully we will see you next week so we can go into deeper detail about your friend Lennie.
George: Trust me, I will be back. This has been very comforting knowing someone else knows what I’m going through and can relate to my problems. Ralph, I thank you.
Ralph: You’re welcome. I will see you next week George.
